Tieke Golf Estate

Positioned on elevated terraces above the Waikato River, Tieke Golf Estate occupies what may be one of New Zealand's most unique golf sites. Beneath the course lies a vast network of ancient river sand deposits, creating naturally free-draining conditions that are exceptionally rare in New Zealand and fundamental to the character of the golf course.

The sandy subsoil promotes firm, fast-running surfaces that reward creativity, strategy, and thoughtful shot-making, offering a style of golf seldom found elsewhere in the country. As the course continues to mature, the natural contours of the landscape and the influence of the river setting are becoming increasingly evident.

Blending striking scenery with a distinctive golfing experience, Tieke is emerging as one of New Zealand's most intriguing modern courses.

The transformation of the former Lochiel Golf Club began after Brett Thomson and Phil Tataurangi were appointed in 2018. More than 1,000 trees and shrubs were removed, revealing ancient Waikato River terraces and sandy soils that had been hidden for over 25,000 years.

From above, the natural character of Tīeke becomes clear. Exposed river sand, fine fescue and carefully defined green sites create a striking contrast across the ancient riverbed.

The removal of extensive planting has given Tīeke a clean, open landscape, with the retained cypresses and redwoods providing scale. Within it, the par-five eighth demands accuracy and careful positioning from the tee through to the green.
