Royal Auckland and Grange
Royal Auckland and Grange is New Zealand’s leading metropolitan golf club, combining the histories of two of Auckland’s most established golfing institutions. Redeveloped by Nicklaus Design and reopened in 2015, the club now features three interchangeable nine-hole courses that provide both flexibility and championship-level challenge.
The redesign transformed a relatively flat site into a course defined by strategic bunkering, strong green complexes and year-round conditioning. A SubAir system beneath the greens helps maintain some of the most consistent putting surfaces in the country, while the maturing landscape continues to enhance the overall experience.
Royal Auckland and the Grange comprises three distinct nine-hole courses—Middlemore, Tamaki and Grange—with two combined each day to create the 18-hole layout. Teeing off on the demanding par-four fourth of Tamaki. Its centre-line bunker dictates both the shape of the drive and the angle left for the approach
Middlemore’s ninth is a driveable par four and a fitting final hole for the nine. The opportunity to reach the green from the tee creates theatre, while the narrowing fairway and greenside bunkers ensure the attempt carries consequence.
Middlemore’s fifth hole demands two precise decisions. First, position the tee shot short of the crossing hazard. From there, use the left side of the green and its surrounds to feed the approach towards the heart of the putting surface. Short or right must be avoided.
