Wairakei is a rare find; a golf course that is also a wildlife sanctuary, making it one of the most uniquely beautiful places to play golf in New Zealand.
Designed by Commander John Harris, Michael Wolveridge and Peter Thomson the course was opened in 1970.
A world-class championship course 10 mins from Lake Taupō, Wairakei is set on 450 acres of natural rolling countryside, surrounded by the region’s geothermal activity.
With streams and lakes, Wairakei is 18 testing holes of exceptional beauty where a 5km (8 mile) fence maintains a predator-free environment to house ducks, pheasants, deer and native birds including the rare Takahē and even Kiwi.
